Woman 27, whowas 'too ashamed' to go out in public unveils her new physique

A woman who used her love of fast food as a ‘coping mechanism’ has unveiled her new physique after losing 155lbs with the help of a gastric sleeve.

When Tori Scott, 27, from Houston, Texas, tipped the scales at 303lb in 2017, it became a turning point in her life – because she finally realised what years of emotional eating had done to her body.

The high school English teacher was ‘too ashamed’ to go out in public and didn’t like eating with others for fear that she would be ‘judged’ for her diet, which mostly consisted of carb-loaded takeaways like pizza, pasta, burgers and fries.

But after flying to Mexico to have a gastric sleeve fitted – which cut out 80 per cent of her stomach – Tori dropped from a size 22 to a size six in two years and now embraces a plant-based diet full of rice, beans and vegetables.

‘From a young age, I used food as a coping mechanism,’ Tori said. ‘Regardless of the emotions that I felt, food always helped.

It was a never-ending cycle of being frustrated at the way I looked, eating to deal with that frustration, then setting goals to lose weight.

‘It always ended up being the same result. I tried every fad diet under the sun and every time I’d stop a particular diet, I’d end up gaining all of my weight back and then some more on top.

‘I would eat a lot in private because I didn’t want to be judged about what I was eating.’

What is a gastric sleeve?

A gastric sleeve is where a large part of the stomach is removed during surgery so it’s much smaller than it was before.

This means the patient cannot eat as much as they could before the operation and they’ll feel full sooner.

At her heaviest, Tori was too embarrassed to go out in public and spent most of her days isolated in her home.

It was then that she made the decision to undergo weight loss surgery and flew to Mexico to have a gastric sleeve fitted.

The teacher decided to have the surgery done in Tijuana because it was more cost-effective at $4,700, when compared to the US.

While Tori says she wasn’t scared or apprehensive about the operation, she was thankful to have her partner at the time, unnamed, go with her.

The surgery saw doctors cut out 80 per cent of Tori’s stomach and leave the remaining 20 per cent.

She said: ‘I felt like the person I was on the inside didn’t match the person everyone else saw. I would try to make myself go do things but I just counted down the minutes until I could go back home.

‘I had tried and failed so many different diets leading up to my surgery that I just told myself it’s okay to need additional help.’

Thankfully, the surgery was a success and Tori was able to lose weight at a slow but steady rate over two years – dropping from a size 22 to a size six.

She also worked out consistently, focusing on weight training and HIIT exercises.

Tori said: ‘After surgery, I learned how to eat a well-balanced diet. I don’t follow a strict diet but I did choose to become a vegetarian.

‘Living my life eating a non-restrictive diet helps me mentally and physically. I don’t emotionally eat anymore.’

Tori now follows a plant-based diet full of rice, beans and vegetables – along with plenty of water.

She said: ‘I make meals like vegan stir fry, burrito bowls, and protein pasta. It’s a lot of staple ingredients that I switch up for different meals. I love cooking now and it is a stress reliever to me.’

She added: ‘I don’t stay inside all day like I used to and I definitely don’t let others’ opinions control me. Physically I can do so much more. I can run, lift weights, keep up with others, etc. My quality of life has greatly improved.

‘I also love trying out new exercises in the gym. Some people are ashamed of having weight loss surgery and keep it a secret but I’m proud of my choice.’
